This machine gun was very successful during the war. The guns rate of fire was 400 to 500 rpm. It was designed by the Hotchkiss company of France in 1900. The Japan manufactured its own 6.5 [.256-inch] version of the 1900 Hotchkiss model (which is the machine gun showed in the picture above.) Two years after the Japan manufactured their own it was adopted by the navy also.
The shelling of Port Arthur began on August 7, 1904 by a pair of land-based 4.7 inch (120 mm) guns. On the Japanese side alone there were 56 heavy guns and mortars with a total of 470 guns. The imperial Japanese army spent about 90,00 artillery rounds during the war, 65.3 million were manufactured and imported by Russia. The Japanese used camouflage and batteries to conceal the positioning of their guns from Russian troops. Only the Japanese mobilized the 19 gigantic krupp- made 289-millimeter [11-inch] howitzers at Port Arthur. Japanese troops used a 150-millimeter [5.9-inch] model 38 howitzers.
During the battle of Sha-ho, 48 russians fired 8,00 rounds in 40 minutes. They had 360 million shells and bombs manufactured. At the battle of Tashihchiao, a battery fired 500 rounds per gun. They used a 152 millimeters [6-inch] gun also. Both the Japanese and the Russians purchased 120-millimeters [4.7 inch] krupp-design howitzers. A 90-150 millimeter caliber was used by Russians and could fire up to 30-kilogram [66 pound] shells of short distance.
The Russian Army very well aware of the power of Machine Guns. Soon after the Russian and Japanese started improving on both their equipment and organization. Afterwards they accepted a new and improved Maxim type HMG. This was the M1910. The sight of the M1910 was set for distances between 600 to 2600 (about 425-1850 meters),it will increase by 50 paces.The M1910 was a sturdy and reliable weapon.
